Although Meta insists the feature is “optional,” it is permanently embedded in the interface, with no option to disable or remove it. Its availability varies by region and user—some users may not yet see the feature even if it’s active in their country.

Meta compares the AI assistant to other fixed features on WhatsApp, such as ‘channels’ or ‘status’. In a statement to the BBC, the company said, “We think giving people these options is a good thing and we’re always listening to feedback from our users.” However, this justification has done little to ease the frustration of users who feel they are being subjected to an AI experiment without explicit consent.

It also offered two links for further information. Yet, not all the information was accurate—one of the links referred to Charing Cross station in London, not the Charing Cross area in Glasgow, indicating a flaw in the system’s contextual understanding.

An Atlantic investigation found that Meta may have trained its Llama models on millions of pirated books and research papers obtained via Library Genesis (LibGen), a shadowy digital library. Meta is now facing legal action from various author groups worldwide who claim their intellectual property was used without permission.

In the same week Meta launched this WhatsApp feature, it also began testing AI systems designed to detect underage users misrepresenting their age on Instagram.
